WE BELIEVE IN A WORLD WHERE ALL WOMEN ARE SAFE
Through our acknowledged 7 steps empowerment program for women, we work towards helping vulnerable women build stronger foundations for a better life and giving them a stronger voice to express more authentically and safely.
We also aim to create a global movement of “women supporting women” to make sure that we do not leave any sisters behind.Right now, as a Scandinavian Country, Denmark is one of the safest places in the world to be a woman, so what better place to start our quest to “pay-it-forward” to support vulnerable women both nationally and internationally.
Sisterpower International wants to spread our message of hope and compassion. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.
OUR WORK
Women constitute the largest population of the world and are a very important component of every society. In many countries, particularly in developing countries, women stay at home and take care of the home and the children. This means that they rely on men to provide for them, and this dependence puts them at a high disadvantage especially regarding bargaining power. The unfortunate part out of this responsibility is that these women often become subject to severe gender-based violence with the risk of getting physical harmed – sometimes to the extent that leaves them disabled or dead.
It is important for societies to consider empowering women as one way of fighting gender-based violence. Poverty is the biggest driver of gender-based violence, especially in rural areas, so the empowerment of women should be in all spheres ranging from economic, political, and psychological. These three human components are the driving factors for development.
Through our innovative empowerment programs, based on acknowledged Safety and Trauma theories, we create full-circle safety for women providing them with trauma treatment, physical safety, emotional and financial safety, legal aid, family planning courses, professional skills and opportunities for self-sufficiency, access to network as well as protecting their rights to be treated as equals in dignity and rights.
The women will leave the program with a detailed safety plan, access to safety network, access to financial aid, the ability to earn money and the strength to teach and help other women.
"Ever since the 1980's, when I was a little girl, the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable people in the World have been of great concern to me. Experiencing the Live Aid Concert in the 80ies, I grew up believing that one could make a difference - and this is why I chose to become a social worker and a trauma therapist.
After working in Denmark with children at risk and their parents for more than 20 years continuously improving my skills in the safety- and trauma focused child protection work, I have gained a very extensive expertise. An expertise I, in 2018, decided to adapt to working with women at risk too.
The turning point was watching the documentary of Ewan Williams called “Myanmar´s killing fields” about the horrific genocide of the Rhongias in Myanmar in 2017. When seeing the dead eyes of the women who had been exposed to sexual violence of the most brutal character as a weapon of war, I knew that something had to change.
I started to research on Women´s safety, which just affirmed to me that empowerment and safety of women are extremely needed and how little it takes to make a huge difference. Not only for the women and their families, but also for the local communities and society as a whole.
As I started sharing my vision, a small group of dedicated people close to me joined in and contributed - and Sisterpower International was born. These people are the heart and soul of Sisterpower International today.
My dream is to experience a modern post-corona Live Aid at Wembley supporting the safety and empowerment of vulnerable women around the world."
COVID-19 PANDEMIC - UPDATE
The COVID-19 pandemic is having severe consequences for women’s health, with spikes in domestic violence and maternal mortality predicted as women lose access to vital health services and social support.
Restricted movement, social isolation, and economic insecurity are increasing women’s vulnerability to violence in the home around the world.
Meanwhile, the number of women and girls living in extreme poverty e.g. in India in 2021 has increased 13% from 2020 to around 100 million in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic - a much larger increase in the poverty rate compared to men. This shows the disproportionate economic impact of the pandemic on women and if this trend holds true, we are looking at a huge setback to women’s empowerment all around the world.
And that in turn will affect the health and prosperity of societies as a whole.
Our strength is amplified with collective action, and you can help make a difference with Sisterpower International right now! The support we receive is a huge driver of the good work we do in addressing some of society’s most challenging problems. Get in touch today and join our community in making a lasting impact.
