WE BELIEVE IN A WORLD WHERE ALL WOMEN ARE SAFE

Through our acknowledged Women's safety and empowerment programs, we work towards giving vulnerable women in developing countries a louder voice and a better life.

Right now, India is ranked the World's most dangerous place for women, so what better place to start our quest!

Sisterpower International wants to spread our message of hope and compassion. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.

OUR WORK

Women constitute the largest population of the world. In other words they are a very important component of every society.

In most developing countries, especially in rural areas, women stay at home and take care of the home and the children. This means that they rely on men to provide for them and this dependence puts them at a high disadvantage especially with regard to bargaining power. The unfortunate part out of this responsibility is that these women often become subject to severe gender-based violence that might end up leaving them disabled or dead.

Poverty is the biggest driver of gender-based violence especially in rural areas.

It is important for societies to consider empowering women as one way of fighting gender-based violence. The empowerment of women should be in all spheres ranging from economic, political and psychological. These three human components are the driving factors for development.

Through our innovative empowerment programs, based on acknowledged Safety and Trauma theories, we create full-circle safety for women providing them with trauma treatment, physical safety, emotional and financial safety, legal aid, family planning courses, professional skills and opportunities for self-sufficiency, access to network as well as protecting their rights to be treated as equals in dignity and rights.

The women will leave the program with a detailed safety plan, access to safety network, access to financial aid, the ability to earn money from a handicraft and the strength to teach and help other women.

FOUNDER'S STORY

"Ever since the 1980's, when I was a little girl, the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable people in the World have been of grave concern to me.

Experiencing the Live Aid Concert I grew up believing that one could make a difference -  and that is why I chose to become a social worker and a trauma therapist.

Having worked, in Denmark, with children at risk and their parents for more than 20 years continuously improving my skills in the safety- and trauma oriented child protection work, I have gained a very extensive expertise. An expertise that I, in 2018, decided that I would use to work specifically with women at risk.

The turning point was when I watched the documentary of Ewan Williams called “The killing fields of Myanmar” about the horrific genocide of the Rhongias in Myanmar in 2017.

When seeing the dead eyes of the women who had been exposed to sexual violence of the most brutal character as a weapon of war, I knew that something had to change.

I researched on Women´s safety and that just affirmed to me how much empowerment and safety of women are needed and how little it takes to make a huge difference. Not only for the women and their families, but also for the local communities and society as a whole.

As I started sharing my vision, a small group of dedicated people close to me joined in and contributed - and SisterPower International was born. These people are the heart and soul of SisterPower International today.

My dream is to experience a post-corona Live Aid at Wembley supporting the safety and empowerment of vulnerable women around the world."

COVID-19 PANDEMIC - UPDATE

The COVID-19 pandemic is having severe consequences for women’s health, with spikes in domestic violence and maternal mortality predicted as women lose access to vital health services and social support.

Restricted movement, social isolation, and economic insecurity are increasing women’s vulnerability to violence in the home around the world.

Meanwhile, the number of women and girls living in extreme poverty in India in 2021 has increased 13% from 2020 to around 100 million in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic - a much larger increase in the poverty rate compared to men. This shows the disproportionate economic impact of the pandemic on women and if this trend holds true, we are looking at a huge setback to women’s empowerment in India and the world.

And that in turn will affect the health and prosperity of societies as a whole.
