The Mentor Match Up Program is a one to one mentoring program for girls, modeled after an agency partner, Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC which is New York City’s largest match site for boys and girls and provides intensive mentoring trainings and technical assistance for new and emerging mentoring programs. At Sister Power, disadvantaged girls (mentees) are paired with professional workingwomen who serve as role models to girls with great potential and limited opportunity to explore it.

The goal of the program is to motivate and inspire girls to think big and accomplish personal goals. Mentors introduce girls to cultural activities in New York City; provide guidance with career and college goals; participate in community service initiatives; provide tutoring, engage in rap sessions and workshops, and introduce girls to job shadowing experiences and possible internship opportunities. Mentors and mentees meet twice a month for three hours per meeting and they have the options to establish meetings on site, at a mentor’s place of business or out in the community. All mentors are screened, background checked, and fingerprinted with the help of SafetyNet, a screening tool provided by another agency partner, Mentoring Partnership of New York. Sister Power asks volunteers to make a commitment of no less than one academic year. Positive outcomes include improved performance on reports cards, fewer days missed in school, and a sensibility to link classroom learning to career choices and opportunities.
