Child Literacy Awareness Program for City Kids After School (CLAP4CityKids)

Literacy

CLAP4CityKids is a comprehensive and well-balanced after school program that provides homework help, tutoring, and reading development assistance to girls in order to strengthen their ability to comprehend what they are reading and learn a multitude of strategies to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Each girl is assessed at intake and receives an individual student plan (ISP) that is specific to her reading development. Girls are grouped and tutored according to their reading abilities.

CLAP4CityKids meets 5 days a week, Mondays thru Fridays from 3pm to 7pm. Early dinner is served from 3pm to 4pm and homework help, tutoring, and girls development activities are between 4pm and 7pm.

After school tutors are college students from Columbia University and CUNY Schools with an interest in education as future careers. These partner universities establish site-contracts annually with The Sister Power Organization.

Tutors are screened and trained to use a highly structured, research based reading curriculum which facilitates each students’ ability to improve performance on state tests and it has a strong focus on Read Aloud activity, followed by workshops that include Independent Reading, Mini Q&A Lessons, Guided Reading, Shared Reading, and strategic lessons.

Positive outcomes of the CLAP4CityKids after school program are that girls reach academic standards on New York State exams and they improve report card performance.
