Community Service – Held Annually to Support Various Causes

On June 12, 2004, at the First Avenue Street Fair on 79th Street, in New York City, the girls of Sister Power selected to host their very own Alex’s Lemonade Stand as their annual community service project and raised over $1000 for pediatric cancer research.

Adorned in yellow “Alex” headscarves, white Sister Power T-Shirts and a smile for each donating customer, our girls were able to realize how much their efforts can make a difference. While some of the girls canvassed the entire fair for blocks recruiting for donating customers, others stood behind the lemonade stand exchanging smiles with lemonade lovers who were familiar with who little Alex was and what the fuss was all about.

Alexander “Alex” Scott (see right) was a spunky eight-year-old little girl with a mission- to raise money to help fight childhood cancer one cup at a time. On June 12th, Alex’s Lemonade Stand was held in fifty states, as well as in Canada and in France to raise money for pediatric cancer research. This national effort began with Alex’s decision, at the age of 4, to hold a lemonade stand on her front lawn and donate the proceeds to her hospital.

Alex was receiving treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer, since she was diagnosed at age 1. Since that initial stand, Alex inspired thousands and created a national movement. Alex raised over $190,000 for pediatric cancer research. Donations are sent to a Donor Advised Fund at the Philadelphia Foundation called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Fund. Grants from this fund support childhood cancer research causes. Alex passed in late 2004 of causes related to her illness.
