History

The Sister Power Organization, Inc. is a community-based not-for-profit organization established in 1999, and located in New York City’s low-income East Harlem community. In 1999, Cynthia Kirkpatrick brought together a group of professional women to assess the problems and opportunities facing disadvantaged youth living in Harlem. Some women were Harlem natives and others arrived to New York City from different parts of the country to pursue degrees from various universities in the Metropolitan Area. These Sister Power women began to partner with existing programs in an effort to create connections with young women.

Sister Power accomplishes its mission through three primary strategies: after school programming for girls ages 7 to 12, mentor matching and supervision for girls ages 13 to 17 and leadership education and training for all girls in the program. Through these services, Sister Power seeks to establish and maintain strong and supportive relationships with girls and their families from their adolescence to young adult years. By connecting mentoring for teens with academic and leadership supports for younger girls, Sister Power seeks to not only encourage girls to dream big, but also give them the skills, the values, and the connections to make those dreams a reality.
