NEW YORK, June 22nd – collectively, more than 500 youth, mentors, parents, volunteers, and community residents and leaders attended Sister Power’s Annual Girls on Stage Talent Showcase fundraiser on Friday, June 22nd from 6PM to 8PM at Oberia Dempsey Multi-Service Center (127 West 127th Street Between Lenox and 7th Avenues).

Sister Power girls believe that India is most deserving of this year's award because India epitomizes the woman in entertainment whom girls and young women can be proud of. Girls proclaim India is a woman who approaches her art with self-respect, integrity, & classic cool.

Also, legendary singer and songwriter Roberta Flack made a surprise appearance to present India.Arie with Sister Power’s Role Model of the Year Award AND Roberta was surprised with Sister Power’s Maverick Award for her outstanding achievements in music.

As a tribute to India, Sister Power girls closed the show with a performance of India’s hit song “I Am Not My Hair.” Additional performances by girls included poetry, acting, martial arts, dancing, and singing. Over 100 girls from all over Harlem (who participate in Sister Power programs agency wide) also received awards for exemplary performance in various academic and creative arts categories.
