1966-2008
As a young professional in New York, Cynthia Kirkpatrick recognized that connecting the girls growing up in East Harlem to the networks of accomplished, well educated women she had become acquainted with as an adult, would introduce girls to a great variety of career and life paths to which they aren’t typically exposed. Sister Power evolved from the simple vision of the power of connecting women and girls who are often living within a few miles of each other, but existing in different worlds. The great demand and response led to the formalization of Sister Power programs and an organizational structure in 1999, with Cynthia operating as the Executive Director until her untimely passing in 2008. Cynthia’s vision is still alive and will continue to live on through the Sister Power Organization, as well as in the young girls in the Harlem Community.
